# General
Morcaer is a [[Vinsklar]]-based smuggler. He runs a large organisation and is well-connected to the merchant elite.
## Morcaer's Smugglers
Morcaer's operation is large and well organised, and he oversees multiple crews. His smuggling largely focuses on evading the import quotas of Vinsklar's powerful merchant guilds, though he dabbles in other ventures, such as [[Gudesberg]] tithe evasion, night routes, and contraband cargo. His main headquarters is a warehouse in the Market Quarter, though he has other Vinsklar facilities as well.
Morcaer passes himself off as a respectable trader, burying his smuggling within legitimate shipments, which allows him to conduct his illicit dealings in plain sight. He uses his market connections to keep his name above suspicion; his major trading partners are kept in the dark about the existence of the others, and all are motivated to keep Morcaer in business. Although he's worked with pirates, as every smuggler inevitably does, he never hires former pirates as workers, so he can never be tainted by association.
## Relationship with Uhtred
Although [[Uhtred Uhtredsson|Uhtred]] and Morcaer have worked together on occasion, usually they find themselves competing for scarce opportunities. Although Morcaer has a large operation, Uhtred is simply better, having beaten him to the prize various times, or undercutting his agreements by offering a better price. Morcaer's jealousy has turned venomous. He feels threatened and insulted by Uhtred, and has decided to remove him from the equation.
