The fencepost for this region is the tall volcano Vredeberg (_mountain of wrath_), which emits a constant stream of lava from its peak. This lava flow, named the Burning River, flows south for a short while disappearing into the Haljo-chasm (Haljoskora). All the land to the east of the Burning River is considered to be the Molten Lands. The Molten Lands are rich in minerals, though their extraction is limited these days. The chthona cannot pass the Burning River, so there are scattered camps (none of the large enough to be called a 'town') in the few inhabitable parts of the Burning Lands. They extract and store lifting gas, which is a byproduct of volcanic activity. These camps are the source of lifting gas for all airships in Adenland, and so trade with the mountains is always guaranteed. It is difficult for airships to cross the Burning River because of the thermals and wild air currents, but try they must for such a staple resource. Airships cannot pass much farther east than the lifting gas camps, as the land becomes increasingly more volcanic, with a concomitant increase in air turbulence and violent atmospheric conditions. Before The Riving, the city of Brennmark stood near the western shore of the Burning River (so not in the Molten Lands proper). This was the easternmost city of Skadyrik. It was used to extract resources from the periphery of the Burning Lands – extensive mines were excavated in the area, and tall stone refineries were built for extracting and processing lifting gas.
