Bucket elevators at the edge of the abyss haul water up the canyon wall for use in the city. The Riverworks is the largest and most important of these suppliers. The Riverworks is a complex of several water elevators, all working continuously. Endless chains of bronze buckets descend into the mist below and return with life-sustaining water sloshing over the sides. Colossal winches and steam turbines power the whole thing. When the water reaches the cave, it is dumped into large basins which quickly drain off in various directions. The Riverworks' water storage capacity, while vast, can only contain about an hour's worth of operation without outflow, so the water is continuously distributed according to contracted allocations. The Riverworks supplies: * manufactorium turbines in the Industrial Quarter * airship refuelling and reprovisioning stations in the Market Quarter * drinking fountains and wells all throughout the city * fire suppression cisterns all throughout the city The Riverworks is one of the most strategically vital facilities in Vinsklar. Its workers are highly paid, and the labour can be hazardous – the elevators stop for nothing, and many a careless handler has been crushed, maimed, or knocked off a gantry into the abyss.
